The Phelps Sauerkraut Festival began in 1967 with a one-day program (The Home of Silver Floss Sauerkraut) with many activities. The Phelps Chamber of Commerce started this festival because Phelps was one of the largest producers of sauerkraut in the world.
In the heart of the Finger Lakes lies one of the largest acreages of vineyards in the country with more than 100 wineries. Five wine trails plus one wine path have been formed and named for the lakes they border - Canandaigua, Cayuga, Keuka, Ontario, Seneca, Conesus and Hemlock.
